The Phantom Stranger has a conversation with the Swamp Thing involving his old foe, Anton Arcane:
...later, the Stranger continues to play a background role, as he always seems to do in these post-Alan Moore Swamp Thing stories.

I have to say that Trial By Fire is one of the most brilliant Swamp Thing stories ever written. See this page again reminds me how much the story spooked me when I first read it.
Definitely agree that the Stranger is more of an ancillary character in this, which is unfortunate. Besides maybe John Constantine, the Phantom Stranger is the guy in my mind most likely to keep Swampy in check.
