"First Stirrings" by Doug Moench, Gene Colan, and Steve Mitchell.

After twenty years without his own title, The Spectre returned as a solo star, in a book by the team of Doug Moench and Gene Colan.

Right off the bat, The Phantom Stranger began popping up in the adventures of Jim Corrigan and his otherworldly alter ego:

...looking at this, it seems stunningly obvious how perfect an artist Gene Colan would have been for a Phantom Stranger series. Too bad we got to see so little of Colan's take on the Stranger, but at least we do get a brief taste of it while he was guest-starring in The Spectre.

I was never a fan of Gene Colan. I think it was because of his perspectives...like look at how the glasses sit on that guy's head on the top of the 2nd page, or below that how the blond cop's left ear looks like it's protruding right out of the side of his head. When he was good, he was very good. But similar to Mike Sekowsky, when he was off, he was very, VERY off.
