Crisis on Infinite Earths #12 - March 1986

"Final Crisis" (Ha! As if!) by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and Jerry Ordway.

Sadly, the Crisis ends, and The Phantom Stranger still doesn't get much to do, other than play nursemaid to The Spectre and use him as a conduit for his and the others' magic powers:

...I guess, ultimately, when you're writing a story like this, you have to find some reason why the magicians of the DCU don't just step in and fix everything.

I mean, I don't care how powerful The Anti-Monitor might be, his abilities are still living within the realm of science. Guys like The Spectre, Dr.Fate, and The Phantom Stranger should be able to deal with him with a minimum of effort.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the light on his face doesn't this mark the first time we actually get to see what the Phantom Stranger's face really looks like? Most of the time he's in shadow.

He's actually had his hat knocked off now and then over the years. The first time I saw that, in a Jim Aparo brave-and-the-bold issue, it was quite jarring. Bt if you pick up the Showcase reprint collections (highly recommended!) you'll see he does appear with hat off and face visible on occasion. Though it's usually a sign that something significant is happening. And just like Indiana Jones he always retrieves it.
